Stories
UPMC Chautauqua Labor & Delivery Nurses Dawn Pickett and Amanda Hagg
Dawn has worked at WCA and now UPMC for 17 years and Amanda has worked there for 19 years.

There are 33 employees in the Labor and Delivery Department which is located on the third floor directly above the Emergency Department. The employees are responsible for over 700 deliveries in the past year, which has increased a small amount since previous years.

Because of Covid, childbirth classes were halted so the staff is hard at work on encouraging couples to attend them once again.  There is also a significant increase in women with co-morbidity situations, so much more prenatal education is needed.

The ladies were grateful for the Rotary/Creche Books & Bibs program and have reported seeing Father’s reading the Good Night Moon books to their new babies.

The hospital has OB/GYN staff including physicians, midwives, and doulas from the Lane Group and from the staff at GLPP.

The nurses had high praise for the transition from a small, rural hospital like WCA to UPMC seeing more providers and increased Women’s Health Services.

They are seeing an increase in breast feeding but a decrease in women making their 6-week follow-up appointments. They are also very pleased with the upgrade in furnishings and equipment at UPMC.

They spoke about the training that is done of the staff at least every two years and are hopeful that eventually there will be a nursing school at the hospital. They are presently expecting 17 graduate nurses starting in June but there are additional openings to be filled.
