"Every hero has a story." That was the message during the Prendergast Library's 2015 Summer Reading Challenge, held between June 20 and August 15. The challenge's theme was "Every Hero Has A Story," and enabled children to meet local heroes, such as nurses and firefighters, learn about their professions, and participate in corresponding literacy programming. Earlier this year, the Rotary Club of Jamestown sponsored the reading challenge with a gift of $2,500. During the club's Sept. 28 meeting, members learned that the program had been a resounding success. Tina Scott, the executive director of the library, and Annie Greene, the manager of public services there, spoke to club members about the challenge and said that throughout the summer, participating readers logged 179,902 minutes read and 39 participating teenagers read 330 books. And best of all, the challenge reached approximately 2,400 children and nearly 2,000 parents in the community.
