L-R Joelle Washer, Hunter Farris, Kevin Sixbey

Kevin Sixbey welcomed sailing coach Hunter Farris to speak before the club today. Hunter heads up the Chautauqua Lake Community Sailing Foundation.

The CLCSF Mission Statement is:

To provide coaching, training and instruction in fundamental sailing skills for youth, families and adults, including instruction on safe boating techniques, sportsmanship, boat maintenance, and water safety, to foster and facilitate recreational and competitive sailing by the general public on Chautauqua Lake, and to develop and encourage the appreciation of local boating history and respect for the natural beauty and ecological value of Chautauqua Lake in Chautauqua County, New York.

The CLCSF was founded in the spring of 2015. It’s first program ran that summer soon after the blessing of the fleet, consisting of 12 brand new Z420s. Since then, CLCSF has offered many programs throughout the year for young and old to come and experience the lake through sailing – both recreational and competitive. The sailing season for CLCSF runs from first thaw in spring, some time in March-April, all the way through mid-November.

Hunter said they teach folks ages 8 to 80 about sailing. He went on to say that 50% of sailing is mental, and 50% is physical. Any"body" can sail, it's a lifelong sport, and is kind to mother nature.

There are many local programs, with teen sailing, adult sailing, high school sailing and even a course on sailing at Jamestown Community College.

The CLCSF is located at the Richard O’ Hartley (a longtime Secretary of the Jamestown Rotary) Beach House in Lakewood. Hunter, who is the only full-time employee, encouraged folks to come see him in person any time during their scheduled program hours.
